The last time we hear a lot about the environment and what we can do about it. This is keeping us bussy. Ther are so may thing taht we as individuals can do, save on electricity and heating, save fuelk for our car by riding on a bicyle more often, etc... These are all measures to reduce CO2 emissions.
However, we can do more. Plants need co2. So by planting more trees, shrubs and roses we can help by reducing the CO2 emmissions in our own garden.
Planting roses? We can start now. Oh yes we can. As long as the soil is not frosen solid we can plant. This has it advantages. The plant wil produce new roots and as a result it wil grow better in spring. We wil have flowers in summer at a normal time. And we don not have to give water.
How do we plant ? We select a sunny place, prefarable a place with sun during sunrice, not to drafty and moist. We make a hole a little deeper the the length of the roots. If using bare roots cut the roots at a lenth of 25 cm. The bottom of the hole we work loose and mix about 1 l compost in it.The we place the plant roots down in the hole. Make sure now roots are poiting up. the eye of the plant should be placed 3-5 cm beneath the soil. We fill the hole with loos dirt mixed with another liter compost. Firmly presse the earth arround the plant and then cover the plant almost compleetly with dirt. Leave the braches a few cm vissible. On sandy soil we wil use more compost and eventually mix some bentonite in the soil. It wil make the soil hold its water better. For more information click here
